Little Girl
Wednesday, September 3, 2008
Sitting at the playground, was a little girl with her rag doll. The rag doll was battered and torn, dirty and old. She stared blankly into space, what she was thinking, what was she doing there, no one could fathom. She looked like just any other little girls but she had such old eyes, such sadness in them. What tragedy had befallen on this little girl? I shall tell you her story.

She once had everything. She lacked of nothing and her parents showered her with presents and whatever she wanted. She always had a smile on her face but she was never truly happy. Her parents were hardly at home and other children 'befriended' her because their parents asked them to. She always shared her toys with them but they never returned them back to her. Nevertheless, she continued smiling and lending them her toys day after day after day. They would always take her toys then run off, leaving her alone with her little rag doll. She wished she could play with them but she knew they wouldn't welcome her. So she would sit at the playground playing with the rag doll.

One day, she was counting down silently in her heart until the last bell rang. Her parents would be back for a whole week and had promised to bring her to the theme park and the zoo and many many other places where families go together. The last bell finally rang. She bounced into the car waiting for her and told the driver to rush home so she could prepare to welcome them back. She had prepared everything and was wearing her favourite dress when the doorbell rang. She rushed to the door, only to find a couple of tall men there. Her nanny asked her to go play while she entertained the guests. When they left, her nanny was crying. The little girl asked why was she crying and found out on the way home, her parents had a fatal car accident. She asked what did fatal meant and finally understood that it meant her parents would never come back to her. Ever again.

She was inconsolable. No matter what anyone did, no one could put a smile back onto her face. She didn't even have the strength to put on a fake smile. What's the use? No one she cared about will ever be there to see it anymore. She stopped going to school and instead goes to the playground everyday, the playground near the road where it all ended, holding the rag doll her mother made for her in her little hand.

Today, she stood at the roadside. The sound of an approaching car came and she walked calmly into its path. With a screech of brakes and a terrifying bam, everything went silent. The driver got out of the car and frantically dialled the number for the ambulance on his cellphone, while a little girl laid motionless on the road, with her little rag doll beside her.
